Noni

Morinda Citrifolia (Noni) is an indigenous fruit on the Pacific islands, in Australia and Asia, which is an invaluable plant with its nutritional content and its far-reaching effects. It also exists in traditional medicine. It is effective for abrasives, ulcers, deep wounds, fractures and decoction from its leaves is effective as a painkiller and antifebrile.

Every part of Noni was used in traditional medicine including the stems, leaves, fruits and roots of the plant. Today’s dietary supplements are primarily made of its fruit.

Its presence

Noni in tropical climates is a species of Morinda plant genus in the Rubiaceae family. It usually grows up to 6-8 meters. It has bright leaves with opposite direction. Its small, white flowers grow like a bunch of grapes. The plant is extremely resistant: it germinates quickly in all types of soil, and its seeds remain viable for long in salt water so it can spread in the water to several places. The plant becomes fertile after one year.

It is a very special pant growing constantly. It means that you can find the ripen fruit, green noni, flower, and bud at the same time. The potato-sized fruit has a very unpleasant smell, many people compare it with mature cheeses (e.g. gorgonzola), so in certain places it is called cheese tree or cheese fruit.

 

Its history

The earliest use of Noni can be traced back to the time when ancient Indian doctors discovered and began to delve into the health effects of herbs in nature. This period took place approx. 5000 years ago when the medical system, the ayurveda (literally the science of life), was established in India. Noni was considered a sacred plant of ayurveda. In the ancient texts it was mentioned as Ashyuka, which in Sanskrit means long life.

It was referred to as the Gods’ gift in Tahiti and the queen of plants, early written texts wrote about its broad health effects. Noni fruit was considered to balance the body’s function.

It began to spread to farther places later when Europeans began to explore the Pacific Islands at the end of the 1700s and noticed the use of Noni among indigenous people. Captain James Cook’s own notes also mentioned the observation of the natives on the island in connection with Noni. These explorers brought Noni to Europe.

According to some assumptions, its predominance was hindered by the scent of fruit that is not too alluring, so it wasn’t for consumption for a long time, it has become known based on folk observations and is becoming more and more popular among natural therapies.

 

 

Its nutrient content

The fruit has an extremely high active ingredient content, with 23 different phytochemicals, 5 different vitamins, 3 minerals and 18 amino acids in it, and xeronin and its precursor, that is to say its aproxenorin content is outstanding, with a concentration of 800 times higher of the pineapple.

The fruit contains polysaccharides, coumarin (scopoletin), vitamins and minerals, and amino acids (serine, arginine and methionine) and strong antioxidants such as anthocyanin, beta carotene, catechins, Q10 coenzymes, flavonoids, lutein, lycopene and selenium.

A spoon of Noni juice contains:

  • 3.5 calories
  • 0.9 grams of carbohydrate
  • 1.5 milligrams of Vitamin C
  • 300 micrograms of zink
  • 170 micrograms of Vitamin B3 (niacin)
  • 2 milligrams of calcium
  • 800 microgramsof magnesium
  • 35 micrograms ofiron
  • 10 milligrams ofpotassium

 

Its beneficial effects

An overview of the results of human studies shows that the consumption of noni dietary supplements protects against tobacco smoke-induced DNA damage, increased blood lipid levels and homocysteine ​​levels, and systemic inflammation. Some studies also found that noni juice can improve joint health, enhance physical endurance, increase immune activity, help maintain bone health, help maintain normal blood pressure, and improve gum health.

Antioxidant

Foods containing antioxidants are of great importance for the preservation of our health, as they can help preventing the damage to the cell caused by the disease. The most common antioxidants include anthocyanins, beta-carotene, coenzyme Q10, flavonoids, lutein, lycopene, selenium and vitamins C and E, which exist in several foods and nutritional supplements. Researchers believe that oxidative stress contributes to several diseases, including cancer, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, cataract and age-related macular degeneration. On the other hand, there are a lot of types of antioxidants in Noni that can play a major role in preventing harmful cell processes.

Excellent painkiller, it has a strength that of 70 % of morphine

Noni is an excellent analgesic, while also capable of eliminating the inflammation that causes the most pain. For example, in diseases covering arthritis, a beneficial effect can be obtained by consuming noni. A research including this topic compared the analgesic properties of Noni with hydrocortisone, a known anti-inflammatory compound. Noni has proven to be very effective, with an analgesic effect of approx. 70% of the morphine,without the side effects of morphine use.

 

Maintains healthy blood glucose level

Studies found that noni juice can improve insulin’s effect among patients with diabetes. The nutrients found in the liquid have a synergistic effect on insulin in the treatment of diabetes. In addition, other studies also found that noni may be a healthy functional diet in diabetic diets.

Heals damaged cells and regenerates burns

The extract of Noni is effective in accelerating wound healing. The wound healing properties of the study showed positive results in terms of the weight of granulation tissues, collagen, hydroxyproline, and protein content. Because noni helps reduce the body’s blood glucose levels, which is also associated with the accelerated wound healing process, it indirectly contributes to faster tissue regeneration.

General memory enhancer

Noni can protect you from problems with memory failure. Studies in people with reduced memory function showed that noni consumption encourages brain blood flow and improves memory functions.

Has beneficial effect on the circulatory system

In one experiment, noni consumption resulted in lower cholesterol levels. Smokers who consumed fruit juice decreased cholesterol significantly.
